The resistance of the materials used in Ewona® acoustic products to mould and bacterial growth has been studied in microbiological tests conducted by Eurofins Expert Services Oy. The tests examined Ewona® base material in both uncoated and coated forms.
The results were excellent in both cases: no fungal or bacterial growth was detected in either test sample during the entire 28-day test period.
No detectable fungal growth under demanding test conditions
The fungal growth test was carried out in accordance with the EN ISO 846 standard. The samples were exposed to spores from several different fungal species at a relative humidity of over 95% and a temperature of 29 ± 1 °C.
The samples were examined after 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. Both Ewona® test samples received a result of 0 at every assessment point, meaning that no fungal growth was detected, even microscopically.
According to Eurofins’ conclusion, the tested materials were resistant to fungal growth and did not contain nutrients that would support the growth of microorganisms under the test conditions.
The same result in the bacterial growth test
Ewona® materials were also subjected to a bacterial growth test in accordance with the EN ISO 846 standard.
Once again, both Ewona® test samples received a result of 0 at every assessment point throughout the 28-day test period. No bacterial growth was therefore detected in either test sample.
The results also showed that coating did not alter the material’s behaviour: both the uncoated and coated Ewona® materials achieved the same result in the tests.
Health-conscious material choices as part of a good indoor environment
The primary purpose of an acoustic solution is to improve the sound environment of a space, but the properties of the materials used also matter.
The polyester fibre base material used in Ewona® acoustic products is non-dusting and resistant to mould growth. The Eurofins test results provide independent research data supporting these properties and demonstrating how the material performs under microbiological test conditions.
The results support Ewona®’s goal of developing acoustic solutions that combine effective sound absorption, health-conscious material choices and long service life.
The test results apply to the uncoated and coated Ewona® test samples examined by Eurofins and to the test conditions specified in the report.
